Is it just me or does it seem like a new mascara comes out in drugstores every week? Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not complaining. Its really hard for me to resist a new product, and mascaras come in such cute and shiny packaging, I just can't say no! But with that, I've come to learn what I love and what I don't, so I'm sharing that list with you! Keep in mind, this isn't an all-time best/worst list, its just a compilation of mascaras I've tried lately that either worked for me or didn't. They are in no particular order within their own lists.
Hits:
1. Maybelline Mega Plus Volum' Express
- I think this gives me the most natural look. I bought it a while ago and just recently started using it. I was pleasantly surprised. Very natural, voluminous, "bouncy" looking lashes. Perfect for a "no makeup" look.
2. Maybelline Falsies
- You're probably tired of hearing about it by now.. So I'll spare you. Its my favorite mascara. You can read all about it in my Best Drugstore Buys post.
3. Loreal Telescopic
-This is a new mascara to me. I'm usually not the type to like small, skinny brushes, but I heard a lot of good things about it so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm currently wearing it now, and have been for a week or so. I was shocked at how smoothly it went on and it only took one coat to make my lashes look amazing. It isn't clumpy, and it applies beautifully to my lower lashes. Falsies may have some competition...
4. CoveGirl Clump Crusher
- This is one of the few mascaras I actually completely used up and need to repurchase. It does exactly what it claims: crushes clumps. It does a great job and lifting and separating lashes. I usually use it as a second coat, over another mascara, to comb through and 'crush' any clumps, but it does well on its own as well.
Misses:
1. Rimmel Volume Accelerator
- Don't get this confused with the Lash Accelerator, which is apparently very popular. I can't speak for that mascara because I've never tried it; however, this one I was not a fan of at all. I think its the size of the brush that doesn't work for me. Its very big, and although it didn't look horrible on my lashes, I've never been able to apply it without getting it all over my lid. I once had to redo my eye shadow because I got so much of this mascara on my lid. I think its the wetness, which wasn't too bad, but combined with the awkward brush it made for a big mess. Either way, I plan to throw it away or give it away.
2. Loreal Million Lashes Excess
- This is one of those "the-commercial-sucked-me-in" products. They showed something fancy about the end of the tube where it gripped any excess mascara so there weren't as many clumps. I didn't hate this mascara, it just didn't do much for me at all. I felt like I needed to go over with something else to make my lashes a bit longer. Overall I just didn't see anything special or different.
3. Maybelline Great Lash
- I almost feel a bit guilty talking poorly about this mascara. Its a classic. I remember my mom using it when I was younger. I just find it way too wet, and feels super heavy on my lashes. I want to like it, I really do. It has such a cult following and I don't hear many bad things about it usually.. maybe I'm just in the minority. But either way, I wont be using it again.
4. Loreal Voluminous Butterfly
- This is a relatively new product and I just picked it up a couple weeks ago. Now you see what I mean about not being able to resist shiny packaging! Its supposedly one of Loreal's "most exciting mascara innovations yet", because it has a little "wing" that flairs out at the base. They claim that it extends and lifts your outer corner lashes to look like a butterfly wing. All I have to say is, "eh". It isn't a bad mascara, but in my opinion, the butterfly thing is a total gimmick. I find it awkward to hold on my left eye, to get the 'wing' to hit my outer lashes, and it just didn't do anything all that special. I say pass on the gimmick and get one of the 5 'hits' listed above.
Like everything else, makeup that works for some, doesn't for others. What I love or hate, you may not. So I'm interested to hear if you had different experiences with any of the products I listed. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
